The new year has begun and already, Louisiana State Troop F has investigated one fatal crash resulting in one death. On January 6th, troopers were called to the scene of an accident involving a 16-year-old that occurred on LA Hwy 135 in Franklin Parish. According to KALB, Angel Erwin, 16, had been traveling on the highway in a 2006 Dodge Caravan heading south when his vehicle ran off the side of the road.
Officers were not sure what caused the teen to veer off the roadway, however, after it did, it then struck a tree. The impact resulted in significant damage leading to emergency personnel having to extract both Erwin and his passenger, who was identified as a 15-year-old. Fortunately, the 15-year-old survived the accident but had to be airlifted from the scene and taken to Rapides Regional Medical Center. Erwin, on the other hand, was pronounced dead at the scene. The source did say that toxicology samples were taken to determine if Erwin had been under the influence although the findings were not disclosed at the time the news report was broadcasted.
Louisiana State Troopers Have a Message for You
As a reminder, LA State Troopers are sending out the message to drivers that they should always make good decisions while operating a vehicle and “never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted.” Not only should you avoid engaging in any type of behavior that could potentially cause an accident to occur, but you must be certain that you are properly restrained and any children that are traveling with you are sitting and buckled in the appropriate child restraint seat and that it is installed properly. Although this won’t prevent a car crash, it can help reduce the chances of sustaining a serious or fatal injury.
Accidents Happen Within the Blink of an Eye
The truth is, one small mistake could cause a driver to wind up getting into a serious or even fatal accident and that is not how anyone wants to start their new year off. Last year, Louisiana Crash Data Reports reported that there were 635 fatal crashes that occurred in the state of Louisiana and 682 fatalities as a result of a motor vehicle wreck. Hopefully this year, drivers will take more initiative when behind the wheel to drive safer and smarter and help get that number reduced significantly come December 2019.
